An Accurate Representation Of History - 1503 Words
Studying History Accurately History is very unique to itself when compared to other subjects. Historians and novelist both spend a lot of time doing research in order to accurately write about history. It is very important for historians to gather accurate information from multiple sides of a historical event to be sure what they are writing about is true. Historians and novelist canââ¬â¢t just repeat the process or redo an experiment to prove that it is correct. If a historian only writes from one perspective it will be slandered. In order to portray an accurate representation of history a writer must research the historical event and include multiple perspectives. It is also important for a student to read multiple writings about the time period and event in order to grasp an accurate portrayal of the historical event and significance. In the West African History portion of the class we learned about the womenââ¬â¢s war. The women s war was a war against the women of Africa and colonialism. The women were tired of being oppressed and eventually fought back. Not only did the women fight back, they fought in a way that used their gender to empower themselves. While reading the novel Things Fall Apart written by Chinua Achebe we gain a perspective of how women were treated and respected in the Igbo culture. Slavery And The American Revolution - 938 Words
As a society changes and develops, so do its beliefs and ideals. Freedom and liberty are concepts that are constantly changing, and the American Revolution brought upon major changes to their definitions in the colonies. Two major changes of beliefs were in the concept of slavery and also the roles of women in society. The American Revolution was partly based on the right for Americanââ¬â¢s to control their own property. At this time property could include other human beings. Before the revolutionary war, slavery was a central institution in American society in the late 18th century. Although it had its challenges, such as in the document Washington Returns Slaves to their Owners. Here it describes how the British had offered sanctuary to any slaves that escaped and joined their forces. With this George Washington demanded that all of these slaves be returned to their owners, even the ones that fought in the colonial army. Even with attitudes beginning to shift towards ant islavery, slaves were still sent home, showing that not much had changed yet. It was widely accepted among white Americanââ¬â¢s and was seen as a positive thing. Although, this acceptance of slavery began to be challenged in the Revolutionary era. Multiple reasons led to this change in many peopleââ¬â¢s minds; such as, new evangelical religious commitment that was focused on equality of all people and from decline in the profitability of tobacco. We will write a custom essay sample on Engineering Science or any similar topic only for you Order Now The time of the back and forth motion the pendulum shows is called the period. It does not depend on the mass or the size of the arc, only the length and acceleration due to gravity. The formula for finding the period of a simple pendulum is: Where Period Length of pendulum Transpose the simple pendulum formula to find g: To solve the equations for any pendulum, time the pendulum through say 20 back and forth motions. Then record the time and divide it by 20 to find : Once has been found, measure the length of the pendulum, to the centre of the weight and input these values into the equations for . Now the acceleration due to gravity can be found. 10. Discuss forced mechanical vibration, resonance and damping in engineering, egg. Aircraft, bridges, ships, cars, etc. Include the sequence of events and a description of the contribution of each to the final outcome. You are encouraged to draw on your own experience where you have been involved in a vibration issue on aircraft. Vibration can be described as the movement on a body, back and forth from its sting place when acted upon by an external force. There are three main parameters that can be measured from vibration. The first being amplitude, measuring how much vibration, frequency, measuring how many times it occurs in relation to time, and phase, which describes how it is vibrating. Forced mechanical vibration is when an external force from a mechanical imbalance causes oscillations through the system. For example when there is an imbalance on the rotors on a helicopter, the resulting vibrations travel through the aircraft. If the vibration matches the natural frequency of the aircraft, this can cause resonance. Resonance is a potentially destructive vibration as the oscillations will continue to grow in amplitude until the initial forced vibration ceases or failure occurs. For example the well-known ground resonance test on a Chinook aircraft, where a vibration matches the natural frequency of the fuselage and rips itself apart. The likelihood of resonance can be minimized by the use of damping. Damping is the use of systems or components to reduce the amplitude of any oscillations to limit the damage vibrations can cause. This can be done in various ways; springs are used on ears suspension, viscous fluid is used in aircraft landing gear and on the Apache aircraft, rubber lead/lag dampers are used on the rotor head to minimizes the vibration from the blades. An example where forced mechanical vibration leading to resonance has resulted in failure is the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, Washington State, USA in 1940. Problems began to arise when on particularly windy days, construction workers on the bridge noticed that the deck oscillated vertically giving the bridge the nickname ââ¬ËGalloping Grittierââ¬â¢, nevertheless the bridge was opened to traffic on 1st July 1940. The ââ¬ËGalloping motion continued and various attempts to correct it proved ineffective. These included extra strengthening cables and hydraulic dampers. Fig 1 On the day of the collapse, 7th November 1940, the wind speed was MPH which resulted in, at first small oscillations of the deck. The wind caused a phenomenon known as rare elastic fluttering (fig 1), where the centre of the deck remains still and either side of the bridge twists in opposite directions. This then escalated into a resonance effect as the oscillations increased periodically. Once the vibration had Ovid past the bridges damping mechanisms and matched the natural frequency the result was unavoidable as resonance took hold (fig 2). Fig 2 Further damping recommendations were made 5 days before the collapse of the bridge but were too late to save it. Two solutions were proposed: 1. To drill holes in the lateral girders and along the deck so that the airflow could circulate through them (reducing lift forces) 2. To give more aerodynamic shape to the transverse section of the deck by adding fairings or deflector vanes along the deck, attached to the girder fascia Lessons have been learnt from the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, the Bronx Whetstone Bridge, similar in design to the ââ¬ËGalloping Grittierââ¬â¢, was reinforced with fat high steel trusses on both sides of the deck shortly after the disaster to weigh down and stiffen the bridge to reduce oscillations. Thankfully no lives were lost in the collapse and as OTTOMH Amman (a leading bridge designer and a member of the investigation team) said when commenting on the new design of the bridge, ââ¬Ë if errors, or failure occur, we must accept them as a price for human progressââ¬â¢. My own experiences of vibration issues on aircraft are generally related to UT of balance rotors or drive shaft components. There have been several instances of loose tail rotor shapeless due to vibration from the tail rotors and cracking on a cooling fan connected to the tail rotor drive due to a worn bearing hangar also causing vibration. Another example of a vibration issue I have been involved with, is struggling to track and balance the main rotors due to a modification which records stress on critical components. This modification altered the balance on the blades and rotor head due to extra weight from wires. Bibliography ââ¬â Wisped How to cite Engineering Science, Papers

Auditing and Ethics Responsibility
Question: Discuss about the Auditing and Ethics Responsibility. Answer: Introduction: The auditors are entrusted with the sole responsibility to identify and determine materiality misstatements associated with the accounting operations of the audited firm. The auditors need to have certain responsibilities like maintaining the ethical integrity and honesty while conducting the audit-related operations and activities (Apostolou, Dull Schleifer, 2013). In this context, Accounting Professional Ethical Standards Board Limited (APESB) has published the article of APES 110, which deals with the duties and responsibilities of the auditors. Along with this, the report sheds light on evaluating the threats to an auditor and measures to mitigate the same (Apesb.org.au, 2016). Identification and explanation of potential types of threats to Fellowes and Associates in independent situations: The provided case includes information pertaining to Fellowes and Associates, which is an auditing organisation. It has carried out the auditing activities of Health Care Holdings Group (HCHG) in 2014. From the given case, it has been identified that an accounting associate of the audit firm has bought few shares of HCHG. Due to such purchase of the accounting associate, it has created latent threats associated with the independence of the audit firm. APES 110 clearly states that an auditor is debarred from showing any sort of financial attention in the asset of the audited organisation. This sort of interest or instance could be termed as the threat of self-interest of the auditors (Cowlishaw, 2014). In addition, it has been observed that the accounting associate of Fellowes and Associates possesses direct financial interest in HCHG, since the person has purchased the shares of thre latter firm. As a result, it could be considered as the threat of self-interest to the audit firm (Hay, Knechel Willekens, 2014). Hence, the accounting associate of Fellowes and Associates has committed an audit crime, since it could have direct impact on the decision-making process of the auditors. This is a considerable threat in auditing profession, as limited safeguards are in place to minimise the negative impact of such threat. According to this situation, Fellowes and Associates have conducted the valuation of the intellectual properties of HCHG on 1st March 2014, which is valued at $30 million. Moreover, another significant factor is that the intellectual properties are depicted as materials to HCHG. The consolidated balance sheet of HCHG comprises of the same intellectual property amount. Thus, it could be termed as a possible threat to the audit firm (Helin Babri, 2015). According to the regulations of the audit firm, it is necessary for the auditor to dissect the outcome of the past judgement made on the part of another audit partner. This procedure necessitates the need to revalue different assets of the audited firm. In case, the auditor fails to conduct asset revaluation, it leads to threat of self-review (Kaptein, 2015). The second situation depicts that the auditors have considered the identical amount of intellectual properties on 30th June 2014. On the other hand, APES 110 states that the auditors are required to conduct revaluation associated with intellectual properties. Thus, the threat of self-review is inherent in case of Fellowes and Associates, which is a key offence in the profession of auditing. Actions and safeguards to be taken for minimising the risk of similar independence: As observed from the above analysis, the action of an accounting associate of Fellowes and Associates has resulted in self-interest threat. Such instances take place during the time in which a member of the audit group has financial interest in the shares of audited firm. In order o eliminate such threat, Fellows and Associates needs to terminate that specific accounting associate and appoint a new person for the position. Along with this, specific policies and rules could be designed, which would help the audit firm in identifying the staffs showing financial interest in the assets of the audit client. Secondly, Fellows and Associates could reduce the provision of non-audit services to its clients for minimising such threat. Finally, the incorporation of appropriate policies and guidelines would help the audit firm to restrict its staffs in developing financial relationships with its clients (Reinstein Leibowitz, 2014). The second situation denotes the threat of self-review due to wrong asset revaluation relating to HCHG. According to the prevailing regulations, the other auditors need to evaluate the asset valuation procedures. Henceforth, in the context of Fellowes and Associates, the intellectual property valuation needs to be conducted on the part of a separate audit group as a safeguarding measure. However, other preventions are available as well to avert such kinds of instances. In the beginning, it is necessary for the audit firms to stop providing non-audit services to its clients. Secondly, it is crucial to ensure that the audit clients undertake decisions on their own risk from the non-audit services received. Finally, a cooling off-period time is necessary before appointing a senior auditor to undertake responsibilities associated with the audit operations of the organisation (Zadek, Evans Pruzan, 2013).Hence, Fellowes and Associates could implement the above-mentioned safeguarding measu res to prevent instances of inaccurate asset valuation. Conclusion: From the above discussion, it could be evaluated that the auditors are required to conform the regulations and policies of APES 110 during the conduction of audit operations. It has been found that the two major threats, which confront Fellowes and Associates, comprise of threat of self-interest and threat of self-review. Hence, in order to minimise such threats, preventive actions could be taken, as laid out in APES 110. The preventive measures include designing of specific policies and procedures, reviewing the asset valuation with the help of a separate audit team and providing cooling off-period time to the senior auditors. Reeking and Wreaking
Reeking and Wreaking Reeking and Wreaking Reeking and Wreaking By Maeve Maddox Here is a very small sampling taken from the web of the misuse of the verb reek: We had an extremely wet May and June this year in New York City which reeked havoc on many tomato gardens. SISTERS reeked havoc at Mommaââ¬â¢s Christmas Dinner today Although this helped in some patients, it reeked havoc with others, resulting in law suits. that virus sure reeked havoc with your computer The deadly twister that reeked havoc in Tuscaloosa. Note that each error is an attempt to use the idiom to wreak havoc, meaning to cause destruction or devastation. It would be correct to say, A huge earthquake wreaked havoc on Japan, or A string of tornadoes wreaked havoc on Alabama. By itself, wreak means to give expression to; to vent. The word havoc, meaning devastation, derives from a French idiom, crier havoc, to cry (or shout) havoc!' The most familiar use of this word occurs in Antonys funeral speech in Julius Caesar: ANTONY: â⬠¨Caesars spirit, ranging for revenge, â⬠¨ With Ate by his side come hot from hell, â⬠¨ Shall in these confines with a monarchs voice â⬠¨Cry Havoc, and let slip the dogs of war; Shouting Havoc! was the signal to begin battle, the result of which would be destruction. The verb reek derives from two similarly pronounced words that were familiar in Old English times. One meant to emit smoke and the other meant to emit a strong smell. Today the verb reek may have either meaning: The reeking chimney annoyed the neighbors. After putting gas in the car my hands reeked of gasoline. The homes and clothing of smokers reek of burnt tobacco. His actions reek of self-love. Bottom line: Chimneys, cigars, and bad relationships reek. Hurricanes, earthquakes, ice storms, droughts, and war wreak destruction and devastation. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? The Great Game, Diplomats and Alliances, 1815-1914 Essay
The Great Game, Diplomats and Alliances, 1815-1914 - Essay Example The researcher will also examine whether later generations unfairly minimized their contributions to peace or they played their role in establishing peace. Scope of the Essay As history and political science is a very vast subject, which stems from the first day of the human history, it is not possible to cover the whole subject in one essay. Therefore, the researcher has planned to include the chronological area of 1815 to 1814 in order to discuss the major diplomacies and political alliances formed during that particular time. Moreover, if we talk about the countries that this essay would cover, again history involves the political and social situations of all countries of the world, which is not easy to be covered in one essay. Therefore, the researcher has planned to narrow his/her focus to five major political powers of that time which include Russia and Great Britain (the two peripheral powers) and Austria, France, and Prussia (Central European Powers). The whole research will revolve around the major political and diplomatic roles of these five countries in political development, as well as in establishing peace in the world. The essay will also include the political systems of these countries and their influence on the political setups of neighboring countries. Moreover, the essay will also include a discussion on why later generations seemed to have minimized their efforts in meeting the requirements of establishing peace in the world.

Attractive nuisance doctrine Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Attractive nuisance doctrine - Essay Example The doctrine can be linked to anything lying on the land, but mostly to dangerous objects such as; abandoned cars, piles of timber, sand, trampolines or even swimming pools (Okrent 18). The doctrine tends to protect small children who are not mature enough to make responsible decisions over their own safety. The doctrine does not carter for adults. However, if an adult sustains injuries while attempting to save a child who is in an attractive nuisance, then the owner of the property will also be held responsible for the injuries of the adult. When citizens reside in areas where there are children, they are expected by the society to come up with responsible ways of protecting the kids (Okrent 19). A situation might arise when a child trespasses to someone elseââ¬â¢s property, and in the midst of having fun, for example, swimming, the child drowns. The accident happened without the propertyââ¬â¢s owner being aware (Okrent 24). Therefore, it would be unfair for the owner to be charged with violating attractive nuisance. If the property owner has knowledge of the presence of children on his or her of the property, and a risk occurs linking it to any object that might harm them, then the owner is responsible for violating attractive nuisance (Okrent 20). In this essay, it is clear that the law of attractive nuisance is actually fair. If a person has something on their property that would raise the curiosity of small kids, for example, a swimming pool or a damaged car, the individual needs to check whether they are sufficiently and safely sheltered. The person should adopt methods like putting up a secured barrier or safe and sound covering over the entity (Okrent 30). Landowners are required to be aware of all the potential dangers posed by their property like tractors or an open ware house. This will help them know what to keep

First 1 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
First 1 - Assignment Example Political science, therefore, guide on how to address political situations such as sharing of national resources to avoid disputes and dangers of conflicts groups. According to Nelson (2014), politics is the science of ââ¬Ëwho gets what, when and howââ¬â¢ (Nelson). The president has therefore a choice to appoint political scientist to help him address the struggle that exist in budgeting, military stand points and in international powers brokering in a countries interest. Political scientist has the knowhow to address region and international politics. The issue of energy crisis for example requires the understanding of energy producing country policies to better sigh cost effective and long lasting political, economic and social ties. A president who is keen on keeping a high rating on his performance and always a delight on his electorate would have a political scientists as his staff. Political scientists ensure that the policies pursued by his president are that that addresses peopleââ¬â¢s needs Vis a Vis others interests (Nelson). For example, President Obama is keen on addressing the immigration problem in the United States because it is at the heart of his electoral college. Majority of the people that voted for him were hopeful that he would address their needs while he is the president. Therefore, a political scientist has a priority to roll out immigrations policies more than any other academician. In contrast, if the president were to hire an economist or an environmentalist as his staff he would suffer from political unrest and poor rating because these experts is best in addressing problem disregarding political effects. Economist answers economic problem touching on every American while a political scientist would have a different view of the same as he or she would be weighing the benefit of economic policies on the needs of the president political strengths. A political scientist on staff run the

How has Portugal been affected by globalization
How has Portugal been affected by globalization Economic globalization is not a recent phenomenon, it is the continuous evolution of developments that have been in train for a considerable amount of time. One may define economic globalization as the process by which markets and production in different countries are becoming increasingly interdependent due to the dynamics of trade in goods and services and flows of capital and technology European Commission (1997) cited in Sloman (2006). In other words, it involves the use of the factors of production on a world scale. The aim this essay is to discuss the impact of globalization in the economy of Portugal. Firstly, this paper will examine the relation between the globalization concept and the Portuguese integration in the European Union, explain in what forms its has been beneficial and describe the job creation in the service sector brought about the development of new information, production technologies and the expansion of tourism. Secondly, it is going to discuss the different negative repercussions of globalization in the various sectors of economic activity, analyse the socio-economic consequences of the relocation of multinationals, consider certain foreign investments in Portugal and expose certain possible disadvantages of having a single currency. The European Union as Cardoso and Ferreira (2000) asserts is currently the most successful example of regional economic integration which reflects the present Era of globalization. Portugal as a member of it since 1986 and as consequence of the European integration process has been experiencing considerable political, social and mainly economic changes. According to the above mentioned author, the various Portuguese areas of economic activity have been profoundly influenced by the European regulations and policies. With the creation of a common European market and a single currency, several constraints that limited in some extent the efficiency of business organizations and the full employment of their resources have been suppressed, the Portuguese companies gained the opportunity to explore economies of scale and to specialize in certain good and services through comparative advantage, improved their position to negotiate internationally, eliminated the exchange rate uncertainty, re duced inflation rates and enhanced competition which stimulates greater economic efficiency. Moreover, Cardoso and Ferreira (2000) further affirms that the gains of greater economic integration and interdependence between countries due to the globalization of the economy through the European Union also involve savings in foreign exchanges and transport costs. Furthermore, according to Lima et al. (2006), the above mentioned regional economic integration with its respective technological development of telecommunications and transport also permitted for example the organizational and technological restructure of the banking sector and stimulated employment in the service sector, mainly in the tourism sector. Considering the case of tourism, as Cardoso and Ferreira (2000) explains, this sector that in Portugal assumes significant social, cultural and particularly economic importance in creating jobs, increasing income per inhabitant, in the development of skilled labour, economic dive rsification and infrastructures has been profoundly positively affected along with different various areas of economic activity by the globalization and the European regulations and policies. Currently the total contribution of Travel and Tourism to the Portuguese Gross Domestic Product, including its wider economic impacts, is forecast to rise by 2.4% from à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬25.7bn (14.7% of GDP) in 2011 to à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬32.6bn (16.2%) by 2021 (World Travel and Tourism Council, 2011) and one may deduce that the above mentioned economic facts are due to the present globalization that made the tourism industry grow mainly with the fusion of cultures, transports revolution and deregulation policies as Wahab and Cooper (2001) assert. In addition, Lima et al. (2006) corroborates the above mentioned arguments by pointing out the fact that jobs in the hotel and restaurant sector increased by 9.4% between 1998 and 2004 and it also asserts that there has been noteworthy investments in transpor t and telecommunications, 30,000 jobs were created between 1998 and 2004 in this sector and it represented in 2006 7.4% of the service jobs. Furthermore, as a positive impact of the globalization in the countrys economy, Portugal since its integration in the European Union has always benefited from various structural funds and programs to encourage economic growth, higher competitiveness and to help reduce disparities among regions. As an example, one may consider the Portuguese archipelago island of Madeira which according to Beirman (2003) has been apportioned since 1986 structural funds to develop and modernize the region that made possible the construction of numerous infrastructures as roads, bridges, schools, airports, ports and health clinics. On the other hand, globalization also affected negatively the economy of Portugal in various aspects. According to Lima et al. (2006), the liberalization of the global economic markets encouraged the relocation of national and foreign industries from Portugal to other countries with more profitable production costs, which ultimately resulted in increasing unemployment in certain economic sectors, particularly in the automobile, footwear and textile sectors. As Lima et al. (2006) explains, the effects of the above mentioned aspects are considerably different in the various economic activities. In the case of industry, according to Lima et al. (2006), the number of jobs has been cut significantly by 105,000 jobs between the year 2000 and 2006. In contrast, over the same period, approximately 417,000 new jobs were created in the service sector. However, the above mentioned author further notes that precarious work situations are more common in the service sector. On one hand, from the a nalysis of the above mentioned arguments one may notice that globalization in Portugal creates in some situations new jobs and opportunities to expand companies, but on the other, provokes significant qualified and unqualified unemployment. According to the European Commission cited in Lima et al. (2006), the sluggish European economic growth combined with the acceleration of the liberalization of World Trade resulted in a loss of 860,000 textiles and clothing jobs in EU between 1998 and 2010; sectors that are considerably important for the Portuguese economy. The footwear and textile industries are the source of a considerable amount of jobs in Portugal and they have been severely affected by the relocation of enterprises to countries that offer fewer bureaucracies, less strict labour criteria, financial benefits and cheaper factors of production. According to the Portuguese national statistics institute cited in Lima et al. (2006), Portugal lost 90.000 jobs between 1998 and 2004, reducing its industrial employment from 23.5% in 1998 to 19.4% in 2004. In addition, at the above mentioned period, as Lima et al. (2006) asserts, Chinese entrepreneurs have been investing in the textile and clothing sector, a phenomenon that has previously occurred in Italy where the Chinese business management method, based on production at considerable low margin of profit and high volumes of sales has raised several issues regarding unfair competition. Although one may initially suppose that the above mentioned foreign investment is beneficial to the economy of the country, in reality it may be perhaps considerably prejudicial in several aspects since local small and medium size industries possess difficulty in competing with the Chinese production costs. Regarding other industries, particularly the automobile industry, according to Lima et al. (2006), has also been affected since 1990 by industrial relocation for mainly the above mentioned reasons; There was a 9% drop in jobs i n this sector between 1998 and 2004 (ibid). As the above mentioned author further notes, the closing of the Opel factory in Azambuja in 2006 left 1.200 people without a job and Renault closed its Setubal factory and invested in various new factories in Brazil and Slovenia. Consequently, unemployment as Lipsey and Chrystal (2007) point out, involves numerous micro and macroeconomic issues that damage the economy of Portugal, including the loss of the individuals income, a decline in their living standards, social deprivation, negative multiplier effects, a loss of potential national output, a waste of resources (labour) and fiscal costs since the government loses tax revenues and possesses the necessity of spending more on welfare payments for unemployed family members. Moreover, as Sloman (2006) make clear, due to the current global and regional interdependence Portugal is affected by the economic health of other countries and by their governments policies, issues in any area of the world can significantly affect Portugal through trade and financial markets, despite the eventual geographical distance. The present Portuguese economic situation reflects the vulnerability of the country to financial crisis. Finally, the European Monetary Union that is one of the examples of todays globalization, may be prejudicial to the Portuguese economy if Portugal possesses for example higher rates of inflation and if consequently its national enterprises possess difficulty in competing with the rest of the European Union. With a separate currency Portugal could allow its currency to depreciate and prevent being a depressed region of Europe with rising unemployment. In conclusion it seems apparent that the economy of Portugal has been profoundly affected by globalization. This essay has shown that it is possible to identify in Portugal numerous positive aspects and a significant amount of negative consequences of the global and regional increasing interdependence. One may deduce that the current concerning economic Portuguese situation is in part a reflection of the international financial crisis and the countrys vulnerability to the exterior. Nevertheless, from the analysis of the above mentioned arguments and despite the referred serious prejudicial implications of globalization, it seems undoubtable that globalization in recent years has contributed to the economic prosperity of Portugal. Hence, this essay suggests to minimize the negative effects of globalization in the Portuguese economy, the investment in education to qualify the work force and gain competitiveness, creation of more jobs in viable sectors as tourism, possible greater monit oring of financial institutions to prevent unexpected issues and increased international co-operation to solve the current and future economic problems.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Essay -- To Kill a Mockingbird Essa
Atticus once said You never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them - Examine characters and relationships in to kill a mockingbird, in order to illustrate this maxim! TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Atticus once said "You never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them" Examine characters and relationships in to kill a mockingbird, in order to illustrate this maxim! I think Atticus is trying to say that you never really know a man until you step in his shoes and do what he does. In the story there are different relationships where characters do this. I think the biggest relationship showing this is between brother and sister, Jem and Scout Finch. Through out the whole story they will be together doing things like playing with each other, helping each other and exploring things with each other etc. Even on the first page when they are talking to each other about the events leading up to Jem's broken elbow to the last page where Scout is watching over Jem who is in bed after his broken arm, they are always together even if it is Jem watching over Scout at school or Scout helping Jem think of plans. There are lots of examples in to kill a mockingbird where Jem and Scout are together. The first real time Jem and Scout are together is when they meet Charles Baker Harris and they start talking about reading. "How old are you" asked Jem, "Four-and-a-half?" "Going on seven" "Shoot no wonder, then" said Jem, jerking his thumb at me. "Scout yonder has been reading ever since she was born, and she aint even started to school yet" Here Jem is showing Scout off and showing how proud that his sister has not started school yet but she can read. When Charles B... ...ything. That night Mr Cunningham and his crew come wanting to hurt Tom but luckily for Tom, Atticus is there and Scout manages to talk to Mr Cunningham and get them to leave. When the trial comes Atticus tries his hardest to prove Tom is innocent. He tries different way's and one is when he tells Bob Ewell to write some thing which he does then Atticus asks which side of the face did Mayella get hit on. Atticus makes it so that he catches out Bob. Atticus then asks Tom to come up and asks him to pickup a glass fully knowing he can't. This shows signs that it was not Tom who committed the rape but someone else. Even though Atticus proves this the Jury still finds Tom guilty of rape obviously because he is black and Bob Ewell is white. I think these are the main relationships in to kill a mockingbird, but there are also more but which are no way near as big.

Collision Theory
Collision Theory The theory proposes that molecules must collide in a particular way with a certain amount of energy to ultimately form a new product. This is because only a select portion of molecules during a reaction have enough energy and the correct orientation to break any existing bonds to form new ones at the moment of impact with other reactants. The very minimum amount of energy needed for this process to occur is referred to as activation energy.Collision theory explains why reaction rates differ for alternate reactions and also how chemical reactions occur in the first place. During a reaction, collision theory states that the higher the concentration of the reactants, the faster the rate of the reaction. More reactants leads to more effective collisions between the particles to create a new product whereas a higher concentration of products is associated with a slower reaction rate. An increase in temperature can also speed up the reaction rate.Temperature is a measure o f the average amount of kinetic energy in a system so a higher temperature leads to a higher average kinetic energy of the molecules in the reaction, therefore, more collisions occur; a faster rate of reaction. However, there is a limit in some reactions as some reactants/products can be destroyed or denatured by a temperature that exceeds its optimum conditions. In reactions involving a gas, pressure becomes a factor. Increasing the pressure will increase the chance of molecules colliding as there will be less space for them to move thus speeding up the rate of reaction.Pressure has the same effect on reactions as concentration because both factors alter the density of the particles in the reaction ââ¬â the higher the more dense. In reactions involving solid reactants, to increase the rate of reaction, they should be ground up into smaller pieces (powder) as it will increase its surface area; exposing more particles to the other reactant. As more particles are exposed, the reac tion rate will escalate as more collisions can occur.

6 Steps to Answering Tell Me About Yourself During a Job Interview
6 Steps to Answering Tell Me About Yourself During a Job Interview While this might seem a like simple question to answer with people youââ¬â¢ve just met, it can be nerve-wracking atà a job interview. What is too much or too little information? How do you articulate all of your relevant job experiences in a 30-minute format? During the interview process, first impressions are important and can make the difference in whether you get the job or not. That, in turn, can make a difference in whether you can pay your bills and buy food. A few handy tips can help you sail through this important interview question toà be prepared when the time comes. 1. Include All Relevant Information.Answerà in an inclusive way, but include all the information necessary to give the hiring manager an idea of what youââ¬â¢re about. An ideal response should compelà the recruiter to ask you more questionsà and include parts of your past, present, and future. An interesting response can encourage a recruiter to explore your application further. Whether applying for a sales jobs or other types of jobs, the interview process is the same.2. Answer. Donââ¬â¢t Ramble. The recruiter isnââ¬â¢t interested in hearing a dissertation on your past life. Keep information to what is most relevant, and focus on the job description. Try to keep your response under one minute- thatââ¬â¢s time enough to respond and will show the recruiter your answer is well thought out and articulate. It might be a good idea to write out a response to this question in advance, time it until it is short enough, and practice beforehand.3. Think About the Job.Hiring the wrong person for the job can reflect badly on the recruiter, so he or she wants to find the best qualified person. Getting an interviewee to talk is the best way to go about that, but rambling on about inconsequential things can be a turn-off. Give the recruiter a chance to ask questions and donââ¬â¢t think it is a race to the finish. Be concise and to the point.4. Begin With Your Education. If you are qualified for the educational requirements for the job, begin your statement with your education- what and when you studied. If you donââ¬â¢t meet the educational requirements but have experience that shows you can do the job, then start there. Whatever you do, donââ¬â¢t lie about your education. That can perhaps land you a job but can also cost you the job when the employer finds out. In addition, remember to not get too detailed. There will be plenty of other questions to answer, and you can fill in later.5. Present Your Selling Points. No, the recruiter doesnââ¬â¢t need to know that you worked in a snack shop during high school or that you have four children and a house full of pets. Going through all the jobs youââ¬â¢ve ever held, even though these jobs are not relevant to this one, is a mistake (as you will be able to tell when the recruiterââ¬â¢s eyes start to glaze over). Keep your focus relevant to the job application and highlight the skills and expertise you have acquired from about two other jobs that make you a great candidate for the job.6. Hit the Finish Line.Conclude the answer to this question with why you think your qualifications make you a good fit for the job. If you still have a job at the time of the interview, include how much you would like this opportunity because it offers a challenge and excitement. Donââ¬â¢t say that your current job, boss, or environment is a problem for you. Statements of discontent aboutà a current job may make the recruiter think you could be a difficult person or are job shopping until you find the one that suits you and will take whatever you can get in the meantime. The most difficult part about job hunting is getting to that first interview to be given an opportunity to speak. TheJobNetwork can help by sending job openings that match your qualifications and needs as soon as those openings appear. All you have to do is list what types of jobs you want to apply for and your qualifications and the process begins. This simple way to job hunt is more inclusive than searching for yourself and keeps you from missing opportunities. You can get started right away when you sign up for job match alert.

How to Do the Color Change Chameleon Chemistry Demonstration
How to Do the Color Change Chameleon Chemistry Demonstration The chemical chameleon is a wonderful color-change chemistry demonstration that may be used to illustrate redox reactions. The color change runs from purple to blue to green to orange-yellow and finally to clear. Color Change Chameleon Materials For this demonstration, you start by preparing two separate solutions: Solution A 2 mg potassium permanganate500 ml distilled water Dissolve a small amount of potassium permanganate into water. The amount isnt critical, but dont use too much or else the solution will be too deeply colored to see the color changes. Use distilled water rather than tap water to avoid problems caused by salts in tap water that affect water pH and can interfere with the reaction. The solution should be a deep purple color. Solution B 6 g sugar (sucrose)10 g sodium hydroxide (NaOH)750 ml distilled water Dissolve the sugar and sodium hydroxide in the water. The reaction between sodium hydroxide and water is exothermic, so expect some heat to be produced. This will be a clear solution. Make the Chameleon Change Colors When youre ready to start the demonstration, all you need to do is mix the two solutions together. Youll get the most dramatic effect if you swirl the mixture together to thoroughly combine the reactants. Upon mixing, the purple of the potassium permanganate solution immediately changes to blue. It changes to green fairly quickly, but it takes a few minutes for the next color change to pale orange-yellow, as manganese dioxide (MnO2) precipitates. If you let the solution sit long enough, the manganese dioxide will sink to the bottom of the flask, leaving you with a clear liquid. Chemical Chameleon Redox Reaction The color changes are the result oxidation and reduction or a redox reaction. The potassium permanganate is reduced (gains electrons), while the sugar is oxidized (loses electrons). This occurs in two steps. First, the permanangate ion (purple in solution) is reduced to form the manganate ion (green in solution): MnO4- e- ââ â MnO42- As the reaction is proceeding, both the purple permanganate and green manganate are present, blending together to produce a solution that appears blue. Eventually, there is more green manganate, yielding a green solution. Next, the green manganate ion is further reduced and forms manganese dioxide: MnO42- 2 H2O 2 e- ââ â MnO2 4 OH- Manganese dioxide is golden brown solid, but the particles are so small they make the solution appear to change color. Eventually, the particles will settle out of solution, leaving it clear. The chameleon demonstration is just one of many possible color change chemistry experiments you can perform. If you dont have the materials on hand for this particular demonstration, consider trying a different one. Safety Information Sucrose and distilled water are safe and non-toxic. However, appropriate safety gear (lab coat, safety goggles, gloves) should be worn when preparing the solutions and performing the demonstration. Sodium hydroxide and potassium permanganate can cause irritation and chemical burns in contact with skin or mucous membranes. The chemical solutions must be labelled and kept away from children and pets to avoid accidental ingestion. Potassium permanganate is highly toxic to aquatic organisms. In some places, pouring a small quantity of a solution down the drain is allowed. The reader is advised to consult federal, state, and local regulations for proper disposal. Fast Facts: Chemical Chameleon Science Experiment Materials Potassium permanganateSucrose (table sugar)Sodium hydroxideDistilled Water Concepts Illustrated This demonstration is a good example of an exothermic reaction. The color change is produced via a redox (oxidation-reduction) reaction. Time Required The two chemical solutions may be prepared in advance, so this demonstration is instantaneous. Level The demonstration is suitable for all age groups. High school and college chemistry students studying redox reactions will get the most out of the experiment, but it can be used to stimulate interest in chemistry and science at any age. The demonstration may be performed by any high school or college chemistry teacher. Because there are safety protocols for using potassium permanganate and sodium hydroxide, this demonstration is not suitable for unsupervised children.

Family Folklore Tradition Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Family Folklore Tradition - Essay Example Instead, my fatherââ¬â¢s side of the family is expansive. He grew up with five brothers and two sisters, the collection of which is spread throughout the greater United States, in a variety of jobs and socioeconomic states. With some slight humor, our family reunions always occur at the home of my richest uncle ââ¬â Pat. Our most recent family reunion occurred approximately two years ago. During this reunion all of my fatherââ¬â¢s sisters and brothers agreed to meet at my Uncle Patââ¬â¢s home in Minnesota. Uncle Patââ¬â¢s home is the obvious choice as it is an expansive estate on the water. During our first family reunion when I was a child I was struck by the size and amenities the estate contained, as I had never seen or experienced a home so large. My Uncle Pat was a highly successful stockbroker and his home reflects this affluence. In addition to living on the water, one of Patââ¬â¢s neighbors is rumored to be the musician Prince ââ¬â although we have neve r seen him. During the last family reunion the families arrived in Minnesota on the same day. Not unlike an episode from MTVââ¬â¢s Jersey Shore, or the Real World, the family that arrives first has the first choice of which room to take. As my Uncleââ¬â¢s home is fairly large, there are enough rooms for everyone to stay. Still, one of my uncles decided to stay at a hotel. Even as the families come together under the guise of friendship and shared background, there is always backstories and infighting that occurs among certain people. After the families have all arrived and settled into their rooms a wide variety of events take place. On the first full day of the reunion a large barbeque occurred in the backyard of the house. In addition to the families that arrived for the reunion, generally outside friends and neighbors are invited for the festivities. During the day things such as hot dogs and hamburgers are served and a variety of classic American amenities. While some peop le are eating others are engaging in discussions, or the children are playing video games or swimming in the pool. After everyone has eaten there is traditionally a large-scale volleyball game that occurs. This game is not very competitive, instead it functions to bring everyone together in a cooperative spirit, with children as young as five years old playing alongside forty year old men. The next day is generally reserved specifically for the family. While there is not a singular traditional event that occurs in this day, there are specific events that have been highly significant in my family tradition. For instance, during my last visit we visited the home that my father and his siblings grew up in. While I was initially resistant to the excursion, I soon came to greatly appreciate the experience. The home had long since been bought by another family, but they were selling it and agreed to let out family tour the home. While I envisioned the experience being boring, upon touring the home my father and his siblings began relaying stories that had occurred during their youth. For instance, my father talked about getting stuck in the laundry chute. My uncle showed us all how he would sneak in and out of the house without his parents finding out. While the experience was amusing, it also imbued me with great appreciation for the era and circumstances that my father and his family grew up in. This allowed me greater insight and perspective into his life. Towards the end of the week the family
